MSC Names Next Private Island "Sandy Cay"

MSC Group's Cruise Division has officially announced Sandy Cay, a new luxury private island destination in The Bahamas. Located right next door to the existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the new island is targeting a 2028 opening for guests of both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

The Concept
MSC is designing Sandy Cay as a more secluded, "intimate complement" to Ocean Cay. Leaning heavily into a quieter, nature-forward retreat feel, the company highlights the island’s bright aragonite sand as the inspiration for the name. It's positioned as an elevated and immersive island experience rather than a bustling mega-resort.

Island Features & The Ocean Cay Connection
Early visuals and reporting offer a glimpse into what cruisers can expect. The island sits on a natural sandbank, reportedly built up using dredged deposits from the channel near Ocean Cay. Renderings show an inviting layout featuring:

  • Five separate coves and multiple beach areas for swimming.
  • At least three pools and a small marina.
  • Eco-friendly power setups, including solar panels.

This expansion ties directly into the massive upgrade plan already underway at Ocean Cay (slated for completion in late 2027). That project includes a new pier extension to accommodate two ships, an adults-only "Paradise Sands" beach, new family zones at Seakers Cove, and expanded dining options. Sandy Cay and Ocean Cay are being pitched as a combined, evolved destination experience in The Bahamas.

What We're Still Waiting to Hear

While the concept sounds beautiful, there are still a few practical details yet to be announced:

  • Who goes there? We don't yet know which specific itineraries will visit Sandy Cay, or if it will be open to all guests docked at Ocean Cay versus being a limited-capacity stop.
  • What's included? Details on complimentary beach access versus extra-cost areas (like premium cabanas or exclusive zones) haven't been finalized.

Royal Caribbean Reveals Details for "Hero of the Seas"

The next massive Icon-class ship is officially on the way. Royal Caribbean has shared that Hero of the Seas is expected to debut in summer 2027. The ship will feature nine pools, 28 dining venues, and a breathtaking three-story "Ultimate Family Treehouse" suite. Early booking windows are opening in April, starting with loyalty members.

Royal Caribbean continues to push the boundaries for the ultimate family vacation at sea.

Carnival Tests 21+ Adults-Only Sailings

In a very interesting shift, Carnival Cruise Line has announced four "SEA" (Sailings Exclusively for Adults) voyages on the Carnival Firenze later in 2026. Described as invite-only, these Mexican Riviera sailings will focus heavily on adult-tilted programming and entertainment.

A fun new option for cruisers looking for a kid-free getaway on a traditionally family-focused brand.

Virgin Voyages Officially Arrives on the West Coast

Virgin Voyages' Brilliant Lady made her debut in Los Angeles, kicking off a brand new West Coast season. The initial run features 5-night roundtrips stopping in Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Ensenada, finally giving California cruisers easy access to the popular adults-only line.

MSC World Europa Moves to the Caribbean

MSC has announced a revised winter 2026/27 program, moving the MSC World Europa out of the Middle East and into the Southern Caribbean. The change is tied to ongoing regional instability, and affected guests are being offered rebooking options or refunds.

Symphony of the Seas Leaving Texas in 2027

Royal Caribbean is planning to move the massive Symphony of the Seas from its current homeport in Galveston, Texas, to Fort Lauderdale in 2027. The line has indicated that current sailings won't be canceled, but guests will be contacted regarding the homeport shift.

Alaska Cruisers: Tracy Arm Detours Are Becoming Standard

Due to ongoing hazard concerns following a major landslide in 2025, major cruise lines are continuing to avoid Tracy Arm in Southeast Alaska. Many itineraries are shifting to Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier as the scenic alternative. If your booking still says "Tracy Arm," double-check your latest sailing documents for updates.

Endicott Arm is still incredibly beautiful, but it's always best to know your actual route before you sail!
