Island Orientation

Understanding Kodiak's Geography

The Island: Largest island in the US after Hawai'i. 100 miles long, 60 miles wide. No roads to the mainland.
Key Insight: This is a rugged working fishing port, NOT a tourist hub. Downtown is tiny and walkable from Pier II. Everything beyond town requires a taxi, tour, or floatplane.

Where You'll Dock

  • Pier II (Kelsey Dock): Downtown, 5-min walk to everything
  • Pier III: Industrial cargo pier, 1.5mi from town, NOT safely walkable
  • Free shuttle typically provided from Pier III to downtown visitor center

Main Zones

  • Downtown/Harbor: Museums, shops, dining
  • Near Island: Trails, sea otters, eagles
  • Fort Abercrombie: 4.5mi NE, WWII ruins + trails
  • Backcountry: Bear viewing (floatplane only)

Critical Warnings

Logistical Anomalies & Infrastructure

  • Two piers, vastly different: Pier II = downtown walkable. Pier III = 1.5mi away, industrial, NOT safe to walk (heavy truck traffic)
  • No tendering: All ships dock at piers
  • Pier assignment varies by ship size: Smaller premium/luxury ships get Pier II; larger vessels may get Pier III
  • Free shuttle usually provided from Pier III to downtown Visitor Center
  • No ship-size restrictions, but limited berth space means only 1-2 ships at a time

The Bear Reality

  • You will NOT see bears walking around town
  • Bear viewing = floatplane only ($850-950+pp)
  • 4-6 seat planes; book MONTHS in advance
  • Weather cancels ~20% of flights
  • Ship excursion guarantees a seat; independents risk sellout

Weather & Gear

  • 70+ inches of rain annually—pack rain gear
  • Summer highs: 50-65°F (dress in layers!)
  • Waterproof hiking boots essential
  • Fog/drizzle is the default, not the exception
  • Download offline maps—cell service spotty outside town

Practical Notes

  • Very limited taxis—book early on ship days
  • Rental cars sell out fast; reserve well ahead
  • No public transit system in Kodiak
  • Most restaurants open for cruise visitors but capacity is small
  • ATMs available downtown; USD only

Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Never plan to arrive "at the pier" at all-aboard time. Plan to be back in your cabin. Your ship's all-aboard time is the LAST moment you can board—not when you should arrive.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. All-aboard time: 4:30pm
  2. Subtract security (10-15min): 4:15pm
  3. Subtract travel time (Fort Abercrombie taxi = 15min): 4:00pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 3:30pm

RESULT: Leave Fort Abercrombie by 3:30pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Docked at Pier III (+15min for shuttle)
  • Bear flightseeing tour (+60min weather buffer)
  • First time in port (+20min)
  • Waiting for limited taxis (+20min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Downtown → Pier II: 5min walk
  • Downtown → Pier III: 10min shuttle
  • Fort Abercrombie → Pier: 15min taxi
  • Bear flight return → Pier: 15-20min
