The Prodigy Verdict
The Explorer.
The Norwegian Star lacks the adrenaline-pumping features of the newer Breakaway and Prima classesβno go-karts, no drop slides, no laser tag. Instead, it offers a more relaxed, traditional cruise experience tailored for destination-heavy itineraries like Antarctica, South America, and Northern Europe. Because it carries fewer than 2,400 guests, it feels intimate and manageable. It underwent a major refurbishment in 2018 under the "Norwegian Edge" program, modernizing the decor, though signs of her age (2001 launch) remain in cabin layouts and the lack of balcony availability compared to modern ships.
- Travelers focused on the destination (glaciers, fjords) rather than the ship.
- Groups who can split the cost of the massive 3-Bedroom Garden Villas.
- Couples seeking a quieter, more affordable NCL experience.
- Age: You will notice wear and tear, and there are far fewer balcony cabins than on new ships.
- Kids: Without the mega-attractions, teens may find the sea days less engaging.
- The Haven: This ship does not have a proper Haven complex; it has suites, but not the private "ship within a ship" enclave.
The Zones
Without distinct "neighborhoods," the flow is traditional. The focus is on the Atrium, the Pool Deck, and the aft views.
Spice H2O
Located aft, this adults-only amphitheater features hot tubs, a bar, and tiered seating. It is complimentary and offers the best wake views.
Grand Atrium
A classic, multi-deck atrium with glass elevators and a massive screen. It serves as the social hub for coffee, guest services, and live music.
Oasis Pool
The central pool deck. It features the "T-Rex" kids' pool (a relic of the original design) and two main pools with four hot tubs.
Garden Villas
The hidden zone. Three massive suites on Deck 14 with private gardens, hot tubs, and piano lounges. Unique to the Dawn Class.
Dining & Provisions
A balanced mix of NCL staples. While it lacks the "Food Hall" of newer ships, the complimentary main dining rooms are visually stunning.
Versailles
Main Dining
The visual highlight of the ship. Modeled after the Palace of Versailles, featuring high ceilings and massive aft-facing windows.
Cagney's
Steakhouse
Classic American steakhouse. Located on Deck 13, it offers reliable cuts of Angus beef and the famous truffle fries.
O'Sheehan's
24/7 Pub
The go-to for late-night snacks. Serves wings, burgers, fish & chips, and breakfast anytime. Overlooks the atrium.
Le Bistro
French
Upscale French dining. Features escargot, coq au vin, and a very intimate atmosphere suitable for "date night."
Ginza
Asian Fusion
A complimentary Asian restaurant (rare on other lines). Serves wok dishes and noodles included in your fare.
Moderno
Churrascaria
Brazilian steakhouse. Pasadores bring slow-roasted skewers of meat to your table until you flip your card to red.
Garden Cafe
Buffet
The standard buffet. While not as varied as newer ships, it offers solid breakfast options and great views.
Teppanyaki
Hibachi
Chefs cook on a steel griddle in front of you. It's a performance as much as a meal. Highly popular, book early.
Where It Sails
The Norwegian Star specializes in "bucket list" routes. It avoids standard Caribbean loops in favor of South America and Europe.
- 14-Night Antarctica & South America
- 10+ Night British Isles & Iceland
- Transatlantic Crossings (Lisbon to Rio)
This is often the most cost-effective way to visit Antarctica (cruising by Elephant Island, etc.). Note that it does not land passengers on the continent; it is a scenic cruising experience.

Cost Reality
Older ships generally offer lower base fares, but NCL's "Free at Sea" structure remains. Gratuities apply to all "free" packages.
- Versailles & Aqua Dining
- O'Sheehan's Pub
- Spice H2O Access
- Ginza (Asian Fusion)
- All Specialty Dining (Cagney's etc.)
- Thermal Spa Pass
- Starbucks
- Room Service (fee applies)
On older ships, the Thermal Suite in the Mandara Spa is often less crowded and cheaper than on new ships. It has excellent lap pools and heated loungers.
The Vibe Check
Is this ship for you? It is relaxed, destination-focused, and unpretentious.
Classic cruising. You'll find more people reading books on the promenade deck than queuing for waterslides. It attracts a slightly older, more traveled demographic.
Varies wildly by itinerary. Antarctica sailings are older/affluent; summer Europe sailings see more families, though kids may be bored compared to other ships.

Cabin Recon
As an older ship, standard cabins are smaller than modern standards. However, the suites on this class are legendary.
Inside Stateroom
Very compact (approx 142 sq ft). Best for solo travelers or couples who plan to spend zero time in the room. Unbeatable price point.
Balcony
Harder to find than on new ships. They offer private outdoor space which is essential for scenic cruising in Alaska or South America.
Garden Villa
Among the largest suites at sea (up to 6,600 sq ft). 3 bedrooms, private garden, hot tub, and piano. Perfect for multi-gen families splitting the cost.
