Port Orientation

Understanding Brooklyn's Geography

The Port: Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Pier 12, Red Hook. Gate at Bowne & Imlay St; GPS 210 Clinton Wharf.
⚠️ Critical Insight: Brooklyn is NOT Manhattan. Cunard, Princess, and MSC sail from Red Hook; Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, and Carnival use Piers 88 & 90 in Midtown, 10mi north. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity use Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey. All three are sold as “New York” — confirm yours before booking.

Where You'll Dock

  • Pier 12: One 880ft berth, walk-off
  • Ship limits: 1,135ft x 132ft x 33ft draft
  • Shore power: First East Coast port, 2016
  • Parking: $45 a night, faces the Statue
  • Terminal: 200,000 sq ft, opened 2006

Main Zones

  • Red Hook: Van Brunt St food, 5min walk
  • Atlantic Basin: Ferry landing at the gate
  • Cobble Hill: Court St dining, 20min bus
  • DUMBO: Brooklyn Bridge Park, 3mi north
  • Governors Island: 4min by ferry

Top 6 Destinations

Red Hook Waterfront Walk

The true walk-off attraction. Louis Valentino Jr. Pier Park sits ten minutes south of the gate and frames the Statue of Liberty head-on. Van Brunt Street leads back past bakeries, bars, and shops; the Red Hook Business Alliance maps them at redhookbiz.org. It is free and open during daylight hours, and you can turn back whenever your schedule requires.

Governors Island

A car-free 172-acre island, four minutes from the Atlantic Basin landing beside the gate on NYC Ferry. The island itself is open daily, year-round. The Trust runs its own boat from Pioneer and Conover Streets too — $5 round trip, weekends and holidays only, May 23 to November 1. Free for everyone before 11am.

Brooklyn Bridge Park & DUMBO

Eighty-five acres of waterfront under two bridges, with the city’s best skyline view. Jane’s Carousel, a restored 1922 machine in a glass pavilion, is $4 and closes Tuesdays. Take the B61 bus or the ferry to Pier 6 — the DUMBO landing itself is weekend service only.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

A third of a mile of esplanade cantilevered above the expressway, aimed straight at Lower Manhattan and the harbor through which your ship will sail. Free and open at all hours. It empties into the brownstone streets of Brooklyn Heights and the cafes on Montague Street.

Green-Wood Cemetery

A 478-acre landscape from 1838 that is also an accredited arboretum, with wild parrots nesting in the Gothic gate. Admission is always free and the Fifth Avenue entrance opens daily, 7am to 7pm. Take a paper map at the gate or use the free Bloomberg Connects audio guide.

Coney Island

The boardwalk, the beach, and the 1927 Cyclone. Luna Park reopened on March 28 for the 2026 season; entry is free and rides start at $4. But it runs 60 to 75 minutes each way from Red Hook, which is too long for a boarding day. Save it for a pre-cruise afternoon.

Logistical Anomalies & Infrastructure

  • Docking: One 880ft berth, walk-off; Brooklyn never tenders

  • Three “New York” ports: Manhattan is 10mi; Bayonne is in NJ
  • No subway in Red Hook: B61 bus, or 20min walk from Smith–9th

Transport Tips

  • Subway and local bus cost $3 per ride
  • MetroCard is gone; use OMNY or a card
  • NYC Ferry is $4.50 from Atlantic Basin
  • The ferry’s DUMBO stop is weekends only
  • Citi Bike docks at Pioneer & Van Brunt
  • JFK cab runs $50–75, plus tolls

Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Brooklyn is a homeport, so your deadline is terminal check-in, not a gangway — and Red Hook is a peninsula with one way in. Ships berth between 7 and 8am, and the parking lot clears by about 10:30am. Work backwards from your check-in cutoff, not from sailaway.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. All-aboard time: 3:30pm
  2. Subtract check-in and security (45min): 2:45pm
  3. Subtract travel time (DUMBO by bus = 25min): 2:20pm
  4. Add traffic buffer (45min): 1:35pm

RESULT: Leave DUMBO by 1:35pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Returning from Coney Island (+45min)
  • Ferry, not bus, is your way back (+30min)
  • Weekday rush hour on the BQE (+30min)
  • Cruise-day congestion in Red Hook (+20min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Van Brunt St → Terminal: 5–10min walk
  • BBP Pier 6 → Terminal: 9min ferry
  • Wall St/Pier 11 → Terminal: 18min ferry
  • JFK → Terminal: 40–70min by car
