Port Orientation

Understanding Cozumel's Geography

The Island: 30 miles long (N–S), 10 miles wide (E–W), off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
Key Insight: Cozumel has THREE cruise piers spread along the west coast. Which pier you get determines your walkability to downtown San Miguel. Check your ship’s daily program the night before!

Where You'll Dock

  • Punta Langosta: Downtown—walk right into San Miguel (NCL, Disney, MSC, Oceania)
  • International Pier (SSA): ~3mi south; taxi $5–8 to town (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity)
  • Puerta Maya: ~3.5mi south; taxi $8–12 to town (Carnival, Princess, Holland America)

Main Zones

  • San Miguel: Downtown—shops, dining, the Malecón
  • Hotel Zone (SW coast): Beach clubs, Chankanaab
  • South Point: Punta Sur Eco Park
  • Interior: San Gervasio Mayan Ruins

Critical Warnings

Logistical Anomalies & Infrastructure

  • Docking: All 3 piers are direct-dock—NO tendering in normal conditions
  • Pier separation: Punta Langosta is downtown; International & Puerta Maya are ~3mi south (taxi required)
  • Rare exception: On extremely busy days (5+ ships), overflow vessels may anchor and tender to Punta Langosta
  • Pier assignment: Can change day-of—check your ship’s daily program

Transport Tips

  • No Uber, Lyft, or public buses for tourists
  • Taxis: Fixed-rate zone pricing (no meters)
  • ALWAYS confirm fare before getting in
  • Share a cab = split the flat rate (up to 4pp)
  • Scooter/Jeep rentals available downtown (~$45–60/day)

Money Matters

  • USD accepted everywhere on the island
  • Change often given in pesos at poor rates
  • Taxi drivers set their own USD exchange (~17:1 vs ~20:1 actual)
  • Pay in pesos for better value at local spots
  • Avoid pier ATMs (high fees)

Safety & Sun

  • Cozumel is generally very safe for tourists
  • Sun is BRUTAL—SPF 50+ mandatory
  • Non-biodegradable sunscreen banned in marine parks
  • Tap water is NOT safe to drink—buy bottled
  • Hydrate!; heat exhaustion is common

Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Cozumel is a dock port, but taxi availability tightens when multiple ships depart at once. Never wait until the last minute. Your ship’s all-aboard time is the LAST moment you can board—not when you should arrive.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. All-aboard time: 4:30pm
  2. Subtract security/boarding (15min): 4:15pm
  3. Subtract travel time (beach club = 20min): 3:55pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 3:25pm

RESULT: Leave beach club by 3:25pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Multiple ships departing same time (+20min)
  • Returning from Punta Sur (+15min)
  • Returning from San Gervasio (+20min)
  • First time in port (+15min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • San Miguel → Intl./Puerta Maya: 10min
  • Beach clubs → Pier: 15–20min
  • San Gervasio → Pier: 30–40min
  • Punta Sur → Pier: 30min
