Pier Intelligence

Docking & Disembarkation Variables

The Port: Key West has THREE separate cruise docks under different owners. Which one you get dramatically changes your walk-off experience—confirm your berth in the daily program the night before.
Key Insight: Pier B (private) handles nearly all large ships today and is a 5–10min walk to Duval St. The Navy's Outer Mole is currently CLOSED (lease ends Aug 2026); when used, it required a mandatory shuttle—you cannot walk off it.

Where You'll Dock

  • Pier B (private): Handles nearly ALL large ships; walk-off, ~2 blocks to Duval
  • Mallory Square (city): Small ships only; heart of Old Town
  • All are DOCK berths—no tendering for cruise ships

Main Zones

  • Mallory Square: Sunset Celebration, Mel Fisher, shops
  • Duval Street: Bars, dining, shopping
  • Whitehead St: Hemingway Home, Lighthouse, Truman
  • South Shore: Southernmost Point, beaches, Fort Zachary

Mallory Sq. & Mel Fisher Museum

The waterfront plaza next to the pier—shops, street performers, and the famous nightly Sunset Celebration (a draw for late-departure ships). Steps away, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum displays gold and emeralds recovered from the 1622 Spanish galleon Atocha. Easy, walkable, weather-proof.

Critical Warnings

Logistical Anomalies & Infrastructure

  • Three docks, three owners: Pier B (private), Mallory Square (city), Outer Mole (Navy)—experiences differ
  • Outer Mole closed: Navy ended the city's lease (effective Aug 2026); it required a shuttle, no walk-off
  • Capacity overflow: With Outer Mole down, only Pier B + Mallory operate—some lines anchor/skip on busy days

Transport Tips

  • Old Town is tiny—most sights are walkable
  • Uber & Lyft DO operate here (unlike most ports)
  • Pink taxis & pedicabs widely available
  • Golf carts: ~$90/3hr, $145/8hr (4-pax; age 22+)
  • Conch Train / Old Town Trolley = easy hop-on loops

Money Matters

  • US dollars & cards accepted everywhere
  • It's the USA—no currency exchange needed
  • Prices are high (resort-island markup)
  • Tipping standard 18–20% at restaurants
  • Duval Street drinks are pricey

Safety & Sun

  • Key West is very safe and walkable by day
  • Sun is intense—SPF 50+ and a hat
  • Tap water is safe to drink
  • Watch alcohol pace in the heat—hydrate
  • Roosters roam freely—don't feed/chase them

Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Key West is a walk-everywhere port, so distance isn't the risk—losing track of time on Duval Street is. Note your berth (Pier B vs. Mallory) since walk-back times differ. Your ship's all-aboard time is the LAST moment you can board—not when you should arrive.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. All-aboard time: 3:30pm
  2. Subtract security/boarding (15min): 3:15pm
  3. Subtract walk back (Southernmost = 20min): 2:55pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 2:25pm

RESULT: Start heading back by 2:25pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • You're docked at Outer Mole (shuttle, if open) (+20min)
  • Returning from Fort Zachary Taylor (+15min)
  • Multiple ships in port—crowded streets (+15min)
  • Lingering on a Duval Street bar crawl (+30min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Duval Street → Pier: 5–10min walk
  • Hemingway Home → Pier: 10–15min walk
  • Southernmost Point → Pier: 20min walk
  • Fort Zachary → Pier: 20–25min walk
