The island went Venetian, then French, then British - a protectorate from 1815 to 1864 - and the garrison left cricket behind on the Spianada, where it is still played, in one of the very few places in Greece where the game exists at all. The same period explains the grand neoclassical palace at the north end of the square: it was the British Lord High Commissioner's residence and now houses the Museum of Asian Art, the only museum of its kind in Greece. Ask for tsitsibira in a taverna and you will get the other holdover - a homemade ginger beer brewed here since the soldiers' day.
Not easily, and it is worth knowing before you pack a towel. Corfu Town is a walled Venetian city, not a beach resort - the cruise port sits on a working harbor and the Old Town's waterfront is quay and fortification rather than sand. The realistic options all involve a short bus or taxi hop: the small town beaches out toward Anemomylos and Mon Repos, or Kanoni, twenty minutes on the number 2a bus. If a swim is the point of your day, the honest answer is to commit to Paleokastritsa on the green bus and go early rather than hunting for water near the ship.
No, and the mix-up costs people their excursion. Cruise ships berth at the New Port, Neo Limani, which is the modern quay shared with the big ferries. The Old Port is a separate, much smaller harbor farther east, tucked below the New Fortress and roughly on your way into the Old Town - so it is an extra walk, not a detour, but you need to allow for it. It is also where the useful little boats go: the ferry to Vidos, the wooded island sitting a few hundred yards offshore, runs from there and crosses in under ten minutes.
Because Corfu's runway ends in the same lagoon. The airport's approach comes in low over the Chalikiopoulou lagoon at Kanoni, and the narrow causeway you walk out to the Vlacherna monastery - the one every postcard is shot from - sits directly beneath it. It costs nothing and needs no booking; it is the same number 2a bus trip the guide already sends you on for Mouse Island. Give it twenty minutes rather than five if you want an arrival to line up, and note there is no shade and no railing on the causeway.
Settle the whole itinerary and the whole price before you open the door, and do it in writing or on a phone screen. Corfu attracts more overcharging complaints than most Greek destinations, and the disputes usually start on trips outside town, where the higher rate is legitimately in play and hard to argue with afterward. It genuinely can, and one of the dates falls in high cruise season. Saint Spyridon's relic is carried through the Old Town in a full litany four times a year - in Holy Week, on August 11, and on the first Sunday of November - accompanied by the island's philharmonic bands, and downtown effectively becomes the parade route: streets closed, enormous crowds, many shops closed for part of the day. If your port visit falls on one, do not fight it. It is the most Corfiot thing you will ever see, and on any ordinary day the saint stays in his silver casket in a side chapel, opened only at set services.
Physically yes, realistically no. Saranda sits about 15 miles across the strait and fast ferries make the crossing in roughly half an hour, but a cruise day cannot absorb what sits around it: this is a full border crossing with passport control on both sides, sailings are scheduled for overnight visitors rather than cruise-ship visits, and a delay on the return puts you outside the ship's reach entirely. Independent passengers who miss a ferry back have no recourse. If Albania is the draw, the reliable version is a ship-sponsored excursion, and only when your port day is long enough for the line to sell one.
