Largely yes. The Port of Gothenburg publishes berth specifications, and the central America Terminal is capped at roughly 220 meters in overall length with a shallow draft limit, while Skandia takes ships of any size and Alvsborg handles up to around 285 meters. So if your ship is a mainstream 250-meter-plus vessel, it physically cannot use the walkable berth and you should plan a transfer-dependent day from the start. You are not stranded, and you do not have to buy a ship excursion to escape. Alvsborg is an ISPS-controlled area, so you cannot simply wander out of it on foot - but the port operates a free bus inside the terminal that takes guests to the gate, where taxis and public buses are waiting. From there it is roughly 15 minutes into the center. Buses for organized tours are allowed to drive right alongside the ship, which is why the gate bus goes unmentioned in most excursion pitches.
Only from one shop, and possibly not at all depending on your day. Anything above 3.5 percent alcohol in Sweden is sold exclusively by Systembolaget, the state monopoly; supermarkets stock only weak beer. Systembolaget keeps office-style hours, closes early on Saturdays, and closes completely on Sundays and public holidays - so you cannot make a purchase during a Sunday port visit. Also keep in mind that most cruise lines will hold anything you carry aboard at the gangway until the end of the voyage, so check your line's policy before you spend.
Because of a bridge locals call Osthyveln - the cheese slicer. The Paddan is a low, open-topped boat that runs a loop of about fifty minutes from Kungsportsplatsen through the old moat, canals, and harbor, passing beneath roughly twenty bridges. Several are low enough that passengers must duck, and at the lowest the crew asks everybody to lie flat across the seats. It is a genuinely charming tour and the single most photographed moment of a Gothenburg day, but it is a poor choice if you have neck, back, or mobility problems.
You will find a noticeably emptier city than you expected. Midsummer Eve - the Friday falling between June 19 and June 25 - is the biggest shutdown in the Swedish calendar, bigger in practice than Christmas, and much of the country decamps to the countryside. Many shops, restaurants, and some attractions close or run short hours across the whole weekend, public transit moves to a holiday schedule, and Systembolaget closes. Gothenburg fares better than rural Sweden and the archipelago islands are lovely that day, but plan around parks, the waterfront, and the islands rather than shopping or indoor attractions.
You can, but check the sticker first. Swedish taxi fares are completely deregulated - every company sets its own rates, and a small number of opportunistic firms mimic the liveries of the established operators like Taxi Goteborg and Taxi Kurir. The law requires each car to display a yellow comparison-price sticker on the window showing what a standard short trip costs, and above a set threshold the driver must agree on a fixed price with you before you set out. Read that sticker, or agree on the fare in advance, and prefer a marked taxi stand or a prearranged car instead of hailing one.
Not necessarily - Gothenburg's famous amusement park is seasonal, not year-round. The main season runs roughly from mid-April to late September, followed by separate Halloween and Christmas market periods, with long closed stretches in between; check liseberg.se for your date before building a day around it. Pricing is dynamic and the combined admission-and-rides ticket costs less when booked online than at the gate. It is about ten minutes by tram from the center but realistically a half-day commitment, so it suits long port days and families more than a six-hour stop. The Oceana water park that gets mentioned in older articles has been delayed beyond 2026 and is not open yet.
