Island Orientation

Understanding Grand Cayman's Geography

The Island: 22 miles long (E-W), 8 miles wide (N-S)
Key Insight: This is a TENDER PORT—no dock. Ships anchor in harbor, you ride small boats to shore. Add extra time!

Where You'll Tender

  • Royal Watler: Main terminal, most ships
  • North Terminal: Overflow, smaller
  • South Terminal: Overflow, smaller
  • All within walking distance of each other

Main Zones

  • George Town: Downtown - shops, dining
  • Seven Mile Beach: 10min north
  • West Bay: Turtle Centre, Hell
  • North Sound: Stingray City (boat)

Getting Back to Your Ship: TENDER PORT CRITICAL

Golden Rule: Tender ports require EXTRA buffer time. You must get back to the tender dock, wait in line, ride the tender, AND board the ship—all before last tender. Missing the tender = STRANDED.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example:
  1. Last tender time: 3:00pm
  2. Subtract tender line wait (30min peak): 2:30pm
  3. Subtract travel time (beach = 15min): 2:15pm
  4. Add safety buffer (30min): 1:45pm

RESULT: Leave Seven Mile Beach by 1:45pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Multiple ships in port (+30min)
  • First time in port (+30min)
  • At Turtle Centre (+15min)
  • Stingray tour (book AM departure!)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Downtown → Tender: 5min walk
  • Seven Mile Beach → Tender: 15min
  • Turtle Centre → Tender: 25min
  • Tender ride to ship: 10min
