The Island:
Formerly Little San Salvador Island. 2,400 acres, only ~50 developed. Bahamas archipelago. Owned by Carnival Corporation since 1996. Now rebranded "RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay."
Key Insight:
Currently a TENDER PORT. Ships anchor ¼ mile offshore; you ride tender boats to shore (~10-15min). ⚠️ A new north-side dock is under construction—expected to open mid-to-late 2026 for Carnival ships. Holland America ships will continue tendering on the south side. Rough seas CAN cancel the port call entirely.
2+ miles of ultra-soft white sand with crystal-clear turquoise water. Free lounge chairs on sand (no umbrella). The beach IS the main attraction—consistently rated #1 private island for 20+ years. Walk far from the Welcome Center for quiet stretches.
Bucket-list experience: ride quarter horses along trails to the island's highest point for 360° views, then ride them INTO the ocean for a swim. 20 horses at Pegasus Ranch. Max weight 225lbs. Must book through cruise line—no third-party options exist.
Guided reef snorkeling at Elkhorn Reef with provided gear, or swim with stingrays in a protected enclosure. Bring your own snorkel gear to save money—the beach snorkeling near rocks is decent on its own for free. Stingray encounter in a netted area.
Cabanas: A/C, fridge, ceiling fan, misting shower, snorkel gear + floats included. Villas: 2-story with spacious layout, private balcony. Both include priority tendering. Clamshells (~$50-69) are the value play if you just need guaranteed shade for two.
Guided tram tour covers island highlights in ~1 hour ($25pp). Or bike the 3-mile (5K) loop through trails and along the coast ($30pp, 75min). Both offer views of the nature preserve and bird sanctuary. Great for those who want more than just beach time.
Kayak through Bone Fish Lagoon (700-acre protected habitat) with a naturalist guide. Also available: paddleboards, floating mats, water trikes, Hobie Cat sailboats, parasailing, and jet skis. All rentals at the water sports center near the beach.
Golden Rule: The tender line back to the ship is the #1 complaint at Half Moon Cay. In the final hour, EVERYONE is trying to get back. Lines of 45+ minutes are common. Do NOT wait until the last tender announcement. Start heading back well before you think you need to.
