Yes, and it is the single biggest risk to a Heraklion plan in high summer. Greece's culture ministry has repeatedly ordered midday suspensions at major archaeological sites during extreme heat alerts, and Knossos - open, unshaded, and inland from the sea breeze - is exactly the kind of site that gets closed; in July 2026 it closed for several afternoon hours with on-site temperatures reported around 43C. The closures are announced on short notice, so the practical rule is that in July and August the morning is not merely the cooler slot, it is the only one you can rely on. Check the site's status before you leave the ship.
For most visitors, yes, and for the same reason the purists complain. Arthur Evans rebuilt sections of the palace in reinforced concrete from 1900 onward, complete with repainted columns and replica frescoes, which is why the authenticity argument has followed the site for a century - and why UNESCO only inscribed it, as part of the Minoan Palatial Centres, in 2025. But it also means Knossos looks like a building rather than a field of foundations, which is what makes it land with people who find bare ruins baffling. If you want the real thing, the originals of the frescoes and the Linear B tablets are in the Archaeological Museum in town, not at the palace.
Book your ticket in advance if you can, and verify the combination ticket rather than assuming it. On a busy cruise morning the gate line, not the walk around, is what eats your time, so a pre-booked entry slot is worth more than a pre-booked guide - guides hustle for business at the entrance and assemble walk-up groups all morning. The combined palace-and-museum ticket has existed on and off and its price and validity have changed between seasons, with sources currently disagreeing; check the Greek culture ministry's own ticketing site close to your sailing date. Note too that on a single port day a multi-day combination ticket often saves nothing.
From a city bus stop, not the intercity bus station - and the distinction trips people up, because Heraklion has both and they are different buildings. Line 2 is a Heraklion urban route running between the port area and Knossos; most independent visitors pick it up in the center at Plateia Eleftherias, near the Astoria Hotel, which is also where you come out after the walk in from the terminal. Buses run roughly every 15 to 20 minutes in season. If someone directs you to the KTEL station, that is the long-distance terminal for Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos - you want the city stop.
You will pay it, but at the lower rate. Greece introduced a per-passenger fee on cruise calls in July 2025 with two tiers: a premium rate for Santorini and Mykonos, and a lower standard rate for every other Greek port, Heraklion included. East yes, west no. Elounda is about an hour's drive along the coast, with Spinalonga reached from there by a short boat crossing - a full but genuinely doable organized day, and a much better use of a Crete call than a second set of ruins if you have already seen Knossos. Chania is the opposite direction and roughly two hours each way, which means four hours in a vehicle against a typical all-aboard; it is a place to visit on a land vacation, not a port day. Neither works well as an improvised taxi trip - if you want them, book something with a return commitment.
