Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Heraklion is very manageable—everything is close. But if you're at Knossos or the beach, factor in bus wait time. Multiple ships in port = longer shuttle lines. Your ship's all-aboard time is the LAST moment you can board—not when you should arrive.

Step-by-Step Calculation (Knossos Visit):
  1. All-aboard time: 4:30pm
  2. Subtract shuttle + security (20min): 4:10pm
  3. Subtract walk to port (15min): 3:55pm
  4. Subtract bus from Knossos (25min): 3:30pm
  5. Add safety buffer (30min): 3:00pm

RESULT: Leave Knossos by 3:00pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Multiple ships in port (+20min)
  • First time in port (+20min)
  • At Ammoudara Beach (+15min)
  • Traveling with children (+20min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Old Town → Port terminal: 15min walk
  • Knossos → Port terminal: 35-40min
  • Ammoudara Beach → Port: 25min
  • Lions Square → Port: 15min walk
