Since the visitor route was reorganized, foreign visitors use a separate entrance on the northeast side and are directed to the upper gallery, while the ground-floor prayer hall is kept for worshippers. You still see the dome, the mosaics, and the scale of the thing - but from above, on a one-way route, rather than standing on the marble below. The ticket price covers that visiting area, and there is an augmented-reality audio guide in a couple of dozen languages that you access by scanning a code with your own phone, so bring headphones if you want it.
Yes - Galataport is a full border gate, not just a berth, which makes it different from most Mediterranean ports. Passenger, baggage, and passport control all happen underground inside the terminal, and Turkish officers check documents as you head out. Some lines collect passports on board and process them on your behalf, so photograph yours before you hand it over. The line is the variable worth planning around: with three ships alongside it can take a while, which argues for going ashore either early or after the first rush. Once through, you walk straight out onto the public promenade.
Yes - Dolmabahce, and the two big palaces conveniently close on different days. Topkapi closes on Tuesdays; Dolmabahce closes on Mondays, so between them one is almost always open. Dolmabahce is also the closer of the two to the ship: stay on the T1 to the end of the line at Kabatas and walk a few minutes along the water. It is a completely different experience from Topkapi - nineteenth-century European grandeur, chandeliers, and gilt rather than Ottoman courtyards - and note that guides are not permitted to lead groups inside, so you take an audio guide instead.

The pass runs for five days from first use, so a single day ashore cannot get near its value, and two of the things cruise passengers most want are outside it anyway: Hagia Sophia's tourist ticket is not accepted on the pass, and the Basilica Cistern is separately run. What it does cover is Topkapi with the Harem, the Archaeological Museums, Chora, the Galata Tower, and the Turkish and Islamic Arts museum. Unless you are staying on in the city on either side of the cruise, buy the individual tickets online instead.

Ordinary city ferries cross the same water as the tourist boats, take your Istanbulkart, and run to a fixed schedule with no commentary - a crossing to Uskudar or Kadikoy on the Asian side takes something like twenty minutes each way and hands you the classic skyline view. Kadikoy in particular works as a half-day alternative to Sultanahmet: market streets and food rather than monuments, and two continents in one port day. Check the return schedule against your all-aboard, because the ferry is the only way back.
It is a ticketed attraction rather than a free viewpoint, which surprises people who walk over expecting to climb it for nothing - and the admission is in the same bracket as Hagia Sophia's. The observation deck is narrow and bottlenecks badly once the day gets going, so if you want it, go straight there on a morning docking rather than saving it for the afternoon.
