Both, if you have the time, because the ferry between them is half the pleasure. The official viewing platform is on the south bank at Wik, at the end of bus line 11, with ramp access and canal exhibition panels. The Infopoint Sielbrücke and a small café at Tiessenkai sit on the north bank, reached by bus 91 from the main station. Linking the two is a pedestrian and bicycle ferry that costs nothing - every one of the canal's fourteen ferries has carried people across free since the waterway opened in 1895.
Kiel Week is northern Europe's largest summer festival - a sailing regatta wrapped in around two thousand events and several million visitors, held over the last full week of June. Ships keep coming during it rather than being turned away, so if your dates land in late June you will simply arrive into a city in full swing. The trade-off is that the two places this guide sends you, the Kiellinie promenade and the inner city, become the festival grounds - so expect crowds where you expected a quiet flat walk, and parts of the fjord closed off for racing.
Rather more than the phrase freight zone suggests. Berth 1 at Ostuferhafen is a purpose-built large-ship facility with its own passenger terminal, rated by the Port of Kiel for around six thousand passengers - not a bare cargo quay with a gangway propped against it. What it does not have is a town: the surroundings are working port, which is exactly why the bus into the city matters so much from here. Treat it as a functional terminal you leave promptly rather than somewhere to linger.
You can - regional trains run from Kiel Hauptbahnhof, a flat fifteen-minute walk south of Ostseekai, and Deutsche Bahn's site will give you the day's departures before you commit to the trip. On tickets, ignore the Deutschlandticket the internet will push at you: it is sold only as a monthly auto-renewing subscription, which makes it the wrong tool for a single day ashore. Look at the Schleswig-Holstein day ticket instead, which adds extra travelers for a few euros each and so gets dramatically cheaper for two or more people.
Twice a day, and you can watch without paying anything - the outdoor seal pool on the Kiellinie is visible from the promenade outside the aquarium, and the keepers work the animals through training routines during each feeding. The times shift, and there are no public feedings on tank-cleaning days, so check the aquarium's own site that morning rather than trusting a schedule you read weeks ago. Four seals live there.
Pick by the cure rather than by the fish. Matjes is mild young herring, cured rather than cooked, soft and faintly sweet; Bismarck is herring marinated in vinegar and noticeably sharper; Backfisch is battered and fried, and the one to want on a cold, windy day at the water. Kiel's own tourism office publishes a ranked guide to the city's best stands, which is worth a look if you would rather choose than simply take the nearest one.
