On Bus 500, yes - the whole line takes contactless bank cards, which makes it the simplest way into Porto from the port. On the metro it is more awkward, because the tap-to-pay system is still a limited rollout covering only certain stations, and Matosinhos Sul, the stop you would use going out, is not among them. Coming back from central Porto it usually works. If you want the metro in both directions, buy the reusable Andante card from a machine - it costs a few cents on top of your fare and then loads with tickets that work on both metro and bus. Look for the contactless logo on the validator before you rely on tapping.
Both exist to save you the climbs this page warns you about, and almost nobody plans for them. The Funicular dos Guindais hauls you from the Ribeira waterfront up the cliff to Batalha in about five minutes, which is the single nastiest ascent in the city center. On the other bank, the Teleferico de Gaia runs between the riverside wine lodges and the upper deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge - so you can tour a cellar at river level and ride up to the bridge rather than grinding back up the Gaia hillside. Neither is expensive, and on a hot day either one buys back twenty minutes and a shirt.
It did not, and knowing that in advance is what makes the visit enjoyable. J.K. Rowling has said publicly that she never went in and had not heard of the place - the Hogwarts connection is tourism marketing, not literary history. What it actually is: a 1906 neo-Gothic bookshop with a spectacular crimson staircase and stained glass, and genuinely lovely if you go for the building. On the ticket, note that there is no plain entry fee - you buy a voucher whose value comes off a book purchase, so it only feels free if you buy a book, and a standard ticket buys you no line priority. Not on a port day, in honesty. The terraced vineyards everyone pictures are up around Pinhao, roughly two hours inland each way, and you have to get from Leixões into Porto and back on top of that - four hours or more of traveling before you have looked at a single vine. What is genuinely within reach is the other half of the story: the wine is grown in the Douro but aged in the lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia, a ten-minute walk from Ribeira, because the barrels were historically shipped downriver to the cooler coast. Do the lodges and a river cruise, and save the valley for a land trip.
There is more here than the page's seafood lunch, and it is in the opposite direction from where everyone walks. The terminal itself is worth the thirty seconds of looking up - a white spiral clad in around a million ceramic hexagons, with a University of Porto marine research center inside it. North along the Leca da Palmeira shore are two Alvaro Siza buildings of real international standing: the Piscina das Mares, seawater bathing pools cut into the rock in the 1960s and open in summer, and the Casa de Cha da Boa Nova, his cliff-edge tea house, now a two-Michelin-star restaurant. Admire that one from outside; you are not getting a table on a port day.
