It is open - the tower reopened at the end of May 2026 after about a year of conservation work, its first major intervention since the 1990s. But showing up is exactly what no longer works. Entry is now by timed slot with a reduced daily cap, deliberately introduced to break up the lines that used to wrap around the building, so a walk-up on a busy afternoon can find the day sold out. Book your slot before you sail. Jerónimos Monastery, ten minutes away and run by the same body, also works on timed entry and sells a combined ticket - booking the two a couple of hours apart makes a clean Belém morning.
As of August 2026 it is still out of service, and the reason is not routine maintenance. Carris suspended all of Lisbon's historic elevators and funiculars after the fatal Gloria funicular accident in September 2025; only the Graca funicular, a modern unit, has returned so far. Check carris.pt on the morning of your visit, because this could change. The good news is that the elevator only ever carried you up to Largo do Carmo, which you can walk to from Chiado for nothing - and the miradouros at Sao Pedro de Alcântara and Santa Catarina give you views every bit as good, also free, also without a line.
Yes, and it trips couples up at the first barrier. The navegante ocasional card costs about half a euro from any metro machine, but it cannot be used by more than one person at a time even if you load it with two tickets - so you need one each before you go anywhere. Contactless bank cards work on the metro too, but the same one-person rule applies. It is worth doing properly: paying a driver onboard a tram costs nearly double the pay-as-you-go fare loaded on a card, so on Tram 28 alone a couple recovers the cost of both cards on the first ride and a half.
No, and on a port day that is a real problem rather than a minor inconvenience. You buy a voucher online but must then collect a physical card in person at an Ask Me tourist office - and only once you hold the card can you make the advance online reservations that Jerónimos and Belém Tower now both require. That is a three-step chain inside your day ashore, and the nearest offices do not open early, with one closing over lunch. The card can still pay for itself if you are doing several paid sites, but build the collection stop into your plan first, and note that two of its advertised perks, the funiculars and the Santa Justa lift, are currently not running.
Not for the palace interior. Parques de Sintra sells Pena on a specific date and time, and entry to the palace itself is only at your scheduled slot - miss it on a ship's schedule and there is no second chance. Book before you sail. Remember too that the ticket is only half the problem: private cars cannot reach the monument, so you line up for the 434 bus from Sintra station and then still walk up from the gate, and that line is often the real bottleneck. If the time-lock makes you nervous, Quinta da Regaleira is walkable from the town center and takes the bus out of the equation entirely.
Take the commuter ferry from Cais do Sodré across to Cacilhas. It is under ten minutes, runs constantly, costs a fraction of a sightseeing cruise, and gives you the classic view back at the city, the 25 de Abril bridge overhead, and the Cristo Rei statue on the south bank - and buses run up to the statue from the Cacilhas side if you want to go further. Buy a transit day ticket that includes the river operator and the crossing costs you almost nothing extra. One caveat: these are working commuter boats with enclosed cabins, so pick a window seat rather than expecting a sun deck.
Head east instead of up. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo sits about a kilometer and a half along the river from Santa Apolónia - a flat twenty-minute walk or a short bus ride - and it is the one major Lisbon museum on this side of the city, which makes it a genuine perk of your berth and completely useless to anyone docked at Alcântara. It tells the whole story of the tiles you have been photographing all day, inside a former convent. Closer still, the Panteao Nacional rises directly above the terminal, and its dome terrace gives you a rooftop view over Alfama that most visitors never bother with.
