Getting Back to Your Ship: The Work-Backwards Method

Golden Rule: Lisbon is walkable from Santa Apolónia—timing is forgiving. But if you're at Alcântara or returning from Sintra/Belém, factor in transit time. Always confirm YOUR terminal's location before exploring.

Step-by-Step Calculation (Sintra Day Trip):
  1. All-aboard time: 5:30pm
  2. Subtract security/boarding (15min): 5:15pm
  3. Subtract metro/walk to terminal (20min): 4:55pm
  4. Subtract train from Sintra (40min): 4:15pm
  5. Add safety buffer (30min): 3:45pm

RESULT: Board return train from Sintra by 3:45pm

Add Extra Buffer If:

  • Docked at Alcântara (+20min)
  • Multiple ships in port (+15min)
  • Rush hour traffic 5-7pm (+20min)
  • First time in port (+30min)

Typical Travel Times:

  • Alfama → Santa Apolónia: 10min walk
  • Baixa → Santa Apolónia: 15min walk
  • Belém → Santa Apolónia: 30min tram
  • Sintra → Rossio Station: 40min train
