Long Beach is NOT San Pedro. Every non-Carnival line (Princess, Royal Caribbean, NCL, Celebrity, MSC, Cunard) sails from the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, ~8 miles / 25-30 min west. Confirm your line before booking hotels, etc.

The Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, and Universal Studios Hollywood theme park lie ~33 miles north. The Metro A Line links Downtown Long Beach to LA if you'd rather skip the drive. Plan a full day and beat rush-hour traffic in both directions.
Golden Rule: As a homeport, your deadline is the boarding cutoff on embarkation day — usually about an hour before the ship's evening departure. Greater-LA traffic is the wild card, and terminal check-in plus the security line also eat time. The boarding-close time is the LAST moment you can board — not when you should arrive.

Almost nothing, and that single fact shapes the whole port. The Dome sits on Pier H across the harbor channel from the city, and the only things physically on its side of the water are the Queen Mary complex and the Hotel Maya. Shoreline Village, the Aquarium, and Pine Avenue all look close on a map, but the channel is in between; the Queensway Bridge does carry a separated walking path and people cross it, but allow roughly 40-60 minutes for the full walk from the terminal to downtown, depending on your destination and pace. Assume the free weekend Passport bus, a seasonal water taxi, or a rideshare rather than a casual stroll.
Yes, and it solves your parking at the same time. The Queen Mary operates as a hotel in her original staterooms and sells a package built specifically for cruise passengers that bundles the overnight stay with luggage service, alongside long-term cruise parking you can reserve online ahead of the sailing. Her berth is a short walk from the Dome. If her own lot is full, the terminal garage next door is the fallback, and no other US homeport lets you spend the night aboard a 1936 Cunard liner and then walk to your own ship.
Not strictly, but carry one anyway. The three- and four-night Baja sailings that make up much of Long Beach's schedule are closed-loop, starting and ending at the same US port, so under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative a US citizen may board with a state-certified birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID, and that license now needs to be REAL ID compliant. The problem is the day it goes wrong: if you miss the ship or have to fly home from Mexico, getting back without a passport book is genuinely difficult. Carnival recommends the passport for that reason, and souvenir hospital certificates are not accepted as proof of citizenship.
Not the whole way, because the line ends on the wrong side of the harbor. The A Line's southern terminus is Downtown Long Beach station on 1st Street, which leaves you in the city center with the channel still between you and Pier H. From there you need the weekend Passport bus, a seasonal water taxi, a rideshare, or the long walk across the Queensway Bridge. It is a reasonable arrival for someone traveling light; it is not a plan with checked bags.
Nowhere at the terminal, so settle this before you disembark. Passengers consistently report no public luggage storage at the Dome, and because you collect your own bags before clearing customs you cannot leave them behind either. The workarounds people actually use are a pre- or post-cruise hotel, the Queen Mary included, holding them for the day, or booking a cruise-line transfer or tour that takes the bags off your hands. Long Beach Airport is small and quick to move through, which makes heading out there early far more tolerable than the same plan at LAX.
Because Carnival holds the entire building. It has run cruises out of the geodesic Dome, originally the museum built for Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose, since 2003, and a 2016 agreement with the City of Long Beach and the site's landlord gave the line 100 percent use of the Dome, more than doubling the terminal from roughly 66,000 to 142,000 square feet and creating the space for two-way turnaround operations. The exclusivity is contractual rather than habit, which is why every other line on this coast sails from the World Cruise Center in San Pedro instead.
Quite possibly, and most often in late spring and early summer. Long Beach sits under the coastal marine layer, and the pattern locals call May Gray and June Gloom pushes low cloud and fog over the shoreline overnight and frequently well into the afternoon, holding the coast noticeably cooler than the inland valleys only a few miles away. An afternoon departure in June can be gray and breezy, and the first evening at sea is cool on deck. Keep a layer in your carry-on rather than the checked bag you will not see again until dinner.
It can, if your sailing date lands inside the race window. The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach takes over the downtown waterfront for roughly a week and a half each April, and the city's published closures include the Shoreline Drive ramps feeding the Queensway Bridge, which is the exact link between downtown and your terminal. The Dome itself stays reachable from the freeway side, but rideshare pickups, downtown hotels, and any drive routed through Shoreline Drive slow right down. If you sail in mid-April, pull up the city's closure map for that year and add real buffer.
