They are, and have been for well over a year. Civil unrest broke out in May 2024 and cruise visits stopped for roughly five months; ships began returning from November 2024, and lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Holland America have run Nouméa itineraries since. Australia's Smartraveller has stepped its advice back down to level two, exercise a high degree of caution - one notch above normal rather than a warning off - after the nightly curfew was lifted in early 2025. The residual risk is disruption rather than danger to visitors: protests and roadblocks can appear at short notice and can cut transport links, and individual stops have occasionally been dropped. Placid, yes; harmless, no - and the distinction matters. Published research built on hundreds of photographs taken by a group of retired local snorkelers found a substantial population of greater sea snakes in Baie des Citrons itself, one of the two beaches everyone is sent to. The species is highly venomous. The reason nobody gets bitten is not gentleness but timing and behavior: the males that approach swimmers come into the bays mainly in the cooler months, when few people are in the water, and the snakes have no interest in anything as large as a person. Give them room, never touch one, and never pick one up for a photograph.
No, and this trips up more visitors than any other money question here. The CFP franc has been fixed against the euro since 1999, but a fixed exchange rate is not the same as legal tender - New Caledonia is neither in the eurozone nor in Schengen, and euro notes will get you nowhere. Nor will Australian or US dollars outside the terminal building. Draw francs from the terminal ATM for the market, the buses, and taxis, and put the rest on a card. One consolation: the same currency is used in French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna, so leftover notes are not wasted if Tahiti is later on your itinerary.
Because of a local rule almost no visitor knows about: within a hundred meters of a taxi stand, Nouméa taxis will not pick you up off the street. Beyond that distance you can flag one, but in the parts of town you are most likely to be standing in, you are inside the exclusion and the driver is simply obeying the rules. Use the stand, or telephone for one - there is a twenty-four hour dispatch number - and be aware that waits can run long on cruise days. Assume the fare will be cash in francs unless the driver says otherwise.
At the zoological and forest park in the hills above the city, and it is the most distinctively New Caledonian thing in Nouméa. The cagou is a flightless, crested grey bird found nowhere else on earth, the territory's national emblem, and its call is a strange dog-like barking. The park runs to some thirty-four hectares and protects one of the last patches of dry forest near the city; visitors walk a boardwalk through the enclosure and the birds, being curious rather than shy, tend to walk along with you. It is uphill and not walkable from the terminal - take a taxi, and go in the morning if your visit is short.
That is Nouville, once the Ile Nou, and it was the heart of France's Pacific penal colony. The first convicts under sentence of hard labor landed there in May 1864 after a four-month voyage, and something like twenty-two thousand men were transported to New Caledonia before the system ended in 1897 - among them Communards deported after the Paris Commune of 1871. A good deal of the penitentiary survives: the commandant's house, the convicts' bakery, the chapel, and the workshops. It is joined to the mainland by road now rather than being a true island, and at least one cruise line sells an excursion built around it.
Mondays and the French public holidays, which is not a combination most Australian passengers have in their heads. A Monday visit loses both the Port Moselle market and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in one stroke. On top of that Nouméa keeps the full French calendar - Labour Day on May 1, Bastille Day on July 14, Assumption on August 15, All Saints on November 1, Armistice on November 11, plus Easter Monday, Ascension, and Whit Monday - when banks, offices, and most shops close. If your visit lands on one, plan a lagoon or beach day rather than a shopping and museums day, and carry cash.
