A card, which catches people off guard badly here. Every other piece of Penang advice pushes you toward small ringgit notes for hawkers, jetties, and buses - and then the nearest paid attraction to your gangway takes cards only and will not accept cash at the gate. Carry both. Worth knowing too that the restored moat and the walk around the outer walls can be done without a ticket, so if the card fails you have not wasted the trip.
They are still there, and better than they were a few years ago. After more than a decade of tropical weather had dulled them, original artist Ernest Zacharevic returned in late 2024 and repainted several of his best-known works, including Children on a Bicycle on Armenian Street, Boy on a Chair on Cannon Street, and Boy on a Bike on Ah Quee Street. The wrought-iron caricature sculptures are a separate scheme and unaffected. Do use the current map from the terminal rather than an old blog list - these are paintings on privately owned walls, so the line-up shifts a little year to year.
On a port day, pick one - they are about a kilometer apart and tell a similar story. The Blue Mansion, the indigo one, is a working boutique hotel and restaurant, and you can only see inside on a fixed guided tour at set times, so it works only if your ship's hours line up. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the green one, is purely a museum, open through the day with a guide included, which makes it the safer choice on a tight schedule. If your stop is long and you love the period, do both; otherwise the green one is the lower-risk visit.
Yes - the funicular sells an Express Lane ticket alongside the standard one, at roughly double the price, which lets you bypass the main line and board the next available car. On a fixed all-aboard time that is often the best money you will spend in Penang, because the standard line can run long from late morning onwards. Note also that fares are two-tier: Malaysian identity-card holders pay considerably less than the standard visitor rate, so a price you see quoted online may not be the one you pay. Buy online before you go to skip the ticket-window line, which is a separate line from the boarding one.
Not in George Town, which is unusually relaxed by Malaysian standards thanks to its large Chinese and Indian communities. The densest cluster of bars sits on and around Lebuh Chulia, Love Lane, and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling - all inside the walkable zone from Swettenham Pier. The catch is price rather than availability: Malaysia levies some of the region's steepest alcohol duty, so a beer here costs noticeably more than in Thailand or Vietnam, and it is one of the few ports where the drinks aboard may genuinely undercut the drinks ashore.
Only if you visit in the right months. Penang's durian season runs roughly May to August, peaking around June and July, and the orchards around Balik Pulau are the center of it - the state actively markets durian tourism during those weeks. Outside the season you will find frozen or processed durian rather than fresh. One firm piece of advice whenever you go: eat it standing at the stall. The fruit is banned from hotels and public transport across Malaysia because of the smell, and you should not try to carry it back aboard either.
