Simply, but on a schedule that changes with the day of the week. The Basseterre ferry terminal sits immediately beside Port Zante, several vessels work the route to Charlestown, and the crossing takes roughly 25 to 45 minutes depending on the boat. Tickets cost around ten US dollars one way including port tax and are bought in person on the day - there is no online booking - so the question is never whether you can go but whether the return sailing lands inside your all-aboard. Check the NASPA schedule or the official SKN Transit app for your specific date, because the Sunday and Saturday schedules differ from the weekday one.
Because they were never built for you. St. Kitts has a genuine public transport network - privately run minibuses with green plates beginning H, on five routes fanning out from Basseterre, a couple of them starting at the ferry terminal beside the port - and it costs a few EC dollars rather than a taxi fare. But the routes follow the main round-island road serving villages and workplaces, and Frigate Bay and the Southeast Peninsula are resort development off that spine, so nothing runs there. A westbound Sandy Point bus will get you within about a fifteen-minute uphill walk of Brimstone Hill, which is the one genuinely useful cruise application.
The south one, almost certainly. Frigate Bay is a narrow isthmus with a coast on each side: South Frigate Bay is the Caribbean shore - calm, shallow, and home to the beach-bar strip - while North Frigate Bay faces the Atlantic, with real surf, steady wind, and a quieter, more exposed feel. They are a short walk apart, so a wrong drop-off is recoverable, but save yourself the trouble by telling your driver 'South Frigate Bay' or naming the bar rather than just saying Frigate Bay.
They were brought here, and they never left. The African green monkeys you will meet at Timothy Hill arrived with French settlers more than three centuries ago; they are not native, and the feral population is now estimated in the tens of thousands, broadly on a par with the human population of the two islands. Officially they are treated as an invasive agricultural pest that raids crops, and St. Kitts is also one of a small number of countries that still exports wild-caught monkeys for biomedical research. Worth knowing before you pay for the shoulder photo: it is a trade, not a conservation program.
Sugar. The narrow-gauge line was laid from 1912 onward to haul cane from the outlying estates to the factory at Basseterre, closing a full circle of the island by 1926, and it ran seasonally with the February-to-June harvest. Tourist trains started in 2003 and shared the track with cane trains for three years, until the last sugar train ran on July 31, 2005 and ended roughly 350 years of sugar on St. Kitts. That is why the ride passes ruined chimneys and estate works - the scenery is the industry that built the line.
Modest from the beach, good from a boat - so decide which you want before packing a mask. St. Kitts has no continuous fringing reef, so shore snorkeling means small fish around rocks and structures: the ends of South Frigate Bay and South Friars, the breakwater near the Marriott, patches off Cockleshell. The genuinely rewarding site, Shitten Bay out on the Southeast Peninsula, is reachable only by boat. If snorkeling is the point of your day, book a trip; if it is a bonus while you sit on a beach, expect to be mildly entertained rather than amazed.
The national carnival, and it will be happening around you. Unusually for the Caribbean, St. Kitts holds its carnival over Christmas and New Year rather than before Lent - roughly mid-December to January 2, with J'ouvert on Boxing Day, the Grand Parade on New Year's Day, and Last Lap on the 2nd. If your stop falls on one of those days expect street closures around The Circus and Independence Square, parades through the middle of Basseterre, and normal shops keeping short or unpredictable hours. Wonderful if you want it; a real obstacle if you have a timed excursion to reach.
