a one-scenario cruise stop. Ships may use the downtown Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, anchor and tender to the Roseau Ferry Terminal, or berth at Woodbridge Bay about a mile north of the capital.

The best independent outing if you want nature without committing to a full tour. Start in the Botanic Gardens, then continue uphill to Morne Bruce for the classic overlook across Roseau and your ship. Ideal fallback if weather turns mixed or your visit is short.
Roseau's easiest classic beach escape: black volcanic sand, calm Caribbean water, and casual beach bars. It works well when you want a low-effort half day instead of a full rainforest excursion. Chairs, umbrellas, and Wi-Fi are commonly available for extra cost.

Non-residents need passes for sites in Dominica's Forestry program. Current online terms list a single-site pass and a seven-day pass for state-managed eco-sites; the separate day pass is for Waitukubuli National Trail segments. An older Forestry fee page also lists a US$20 general eco-site day pass, so confirm what is currently sold before budgeting for several stops. Forestry now lists Titou Gorge as an eco-tourism site, but check whether your chosen pass covers it and whether any on-site charge applies. Passes are available online and at visitor centers and authorized vendors.
It is the same island, at the opposite end of it. The Cabrits cruise berth sits at Portsmouth in the north, inside Cabrits National Park, and it is a purpose-built passenger facility with its own terminal, craft shop and taxi area - not an overflow berth for Roseau. What changes is your whole day: the Roseau Valley classics like Trafalgar and Titou are a long transfer away, and the things on your doorstep instead are Fort Shirley, the Indian River boat trip, and the northern beaches. Portsmouth is Dominica's second town. Read the berth name in your cruise documents, because a guide written for Roseau will send you across the island for no reason.

Dominica has a resident sperm whale population - unusual anywhere - and in 2023 it announced the world's first sperm whale marine reserve, covering several hundred square kilometers of its western waters. The protections are real rather than nominal: in-water encounters are capped at around ten minutes, only one group may observe at a time, approaching nursing calves is off limits, shipping is routed away through designated corridors, and there is a whale officer with designated observers aboard vessels. Commercial whale operations require a license and trained guides. Which products are currently sold to cruise passengers changes with the licensing, so ask your line or a licensed local operator rather than booking off a description.
Realistically no, and it is the one people most want to be talked into. The guided round trip to the world's second-largest boiling lake runs six to eight hours and can stretch to ten - roughly three hours each way over hard ground - and guides will not start a party off after the middle of the day. On a normal stop you would be walking back in the dark with your ship gone. The consolation is that Dominica lets you meet the same geothermal system on a much shorter leash: the hot pools below Trafalgar Falls, the sulfur pools at Wotten Waven, or the cold swim through Titou Gorge, all inside a couple of hours of the pier.
Wotten Waven, about fifteen to twenty minutes up the valley from Roseau by road. It is a village of small commercial spas built over the geothermal field - hot pools and sulfur mud, walk-in rather than booked, with entry fees in the region of ten to twenty US dollars depending on which one you choose. There is no trail involved and no fitness requirement, which makes it the obvious answer for anyone in your party who does not want a waterfall scramble. It also sits in the same valley as Trafalgar and Titou, so a driver can string it onto either without doubling back. Bring a swimsuit you do not mind smelling of sulfur afterwards.
Because you are snorkeling over a volcano's exhaust. Geothermal vents in the seabed release gas that rises through the water in continuous streams of fine bubbles, which is how the site got its name, and the water immediately around the vents is noticeably warmer than the sea beside it. It sits inside the Soufriere-Scott's Head Marine Reserve on the southwest coast and is reachable from shore. Two practical notes the photographs never show: the entry is over rock rather than sand, so water shoes earn their place, and it is a working reef, so the usual rules about not standing on things apply.
That is the right question, because a whole port day is what it costs. The territory on the northeast coast is home to around three thousand Kalinago people, the last surviving Indigenous Carib community in the eastern Caribbean, and reaching it means roughly an hour and a half of mountain road each way from Roseau - cruise-line excursions to it run about seven hours door to door. At Kalinago Barana Aute you get a model village with cassava-bread baking, basketry, pottery, and dance. If your interest is cultural and your stop is long, few things in the Caribbean are comparable. If your stop is six hours or your party wants a waterfall and a beach, it is the wrong choice and you should not try to squeeze it.
Two different countries, more than five hundred miles apart, and the confusion causes real problems. Dominica is a small English-speaking eastern Caribbean island of around seventy thousand people between Guadeloupe and Martinique, using the East Caribbean dollar, with KwÊyÃ˛l widely spoken alongside English. The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, speaks Spanish, uses the peso and receives more visitors in a month than Dominica does in several years. They have different currencies, different languages, and different entry requirements. It matters for pronunciation too - locally it is dom-in-EE-ka, with the stress on the third syllable.
