Usually, yes. The Municipality of Skagway publishes a full-season cruise ship calendar showing which vessel is assigned to which berth on which day, and it sits on the port's own pages. It is worth looking up, because the four berths are not equivalent - Broadway and the Ore Dock put you on foot in town, while the two Railroad Dock berths mean a shuttle bus or a water taxi. Assignments do get changed, so treat the calendar as a strong indication and still check your ship's daily program the night before.
Check whether yours crosses into Canada, because that is the split that matters. The Summit Excursion is the short round trip up to White Pass and back, stays on the American side, and needs no border document. The longer options - the Bennett journey, the Carcross service, and the various train-one-way, motorcoach-the-other combinations - all enter British Columbia or the Yukon and put you through a border check. Passengers routinely book one believing they booked the other, and only the Summit trip is document-free.
For U.S. citizens driving into Canada, a passport card or enhanced driver's license can replace a passport book for the land crossing and return to the U.S. NEXUS members can use their card, but Canada advises carrying a passport or proof of permanent residence too. Tour operators may require a passport even when another document is accepted at the border; confirm before booking. Bring the physical document; a photo on your phone is not enough. The catch worth weighing is what happens if something goes wrong on the Canadian side, because a passport card will not get you onto a flight home. If that thought bothers you, carry the book.
Because the railway got here first and never left. White Pass and Yukon Route owns and operates the Railroad Dock, while the Municipality of Skagway owns the other terminal facilities - and the town only took those back in 2023, when a 55-year lease held by the railway's parent company came to an end. The split explains more than it sounds like it should. It is why the shuttle bus and water taxi off the Railroad Dock are a railway operation rather than a town service, and part of why the rockfall problem above that dock has been so slow to resolve, with the public money and the private property in different hands.
You can walk the American end of it, but nobody can walk the whole thing at present. The crossing at the summit is not an official port of entry, so the through-hike from Dyea over to Bennett has stayed closed and hiker numbers have fallen sharply. What remains open is day use on the US side out of Dyea, roughly the first four miles - a long half-day round trip, and considerably more than most cruise passengers take on. The Canadian section is walked separately from the Canadian end. Check the current position with the National Park Service before building a day around it.
That is the ship signature wall, one of the older traditions in Alaska cruising - crews have been painting their vessel's name and emblem onto the rock face beside the Railroad Dock for the best part of a century, by custom on a ship's first visit. The easily reached rock ran out long ago, which is why newer signatures turn up in such awkward spots. Since the rockfall closures it is something to photograph from the deck on the way in rather than somewhere to walk to.
Almost nothing is still standing, and that is rather the point of going. Dyea was Skagway's rival boom town at the foot of the Chilkoot, and it emptied once the railway settled the argument in Skagway's favor, leaving building foundations, scattered timber, the pilings of the old wharf, and a single partly-standing structure. The National Park Service has laid an interpretive trail through the old street grid, and Slide Cemetery holds the dead from the 1898 Chilkoot avalanche. Go for the ghost town and the setting, not for buildings.
Bring it, but it is worth knowing that Skagway is the driest community in Southeast Alaska. It sits in a rain shadow at the head of the fjord and receives a fraction of what falls on the southern panhandle, which is why there is pine forest here rather than dripping rainforest. The reason to pack it anyway is that you probably will not spend the day at sea level: the summit and the Yukon side run colder and wetter than town, and helicopter and glacier trips are canceled for weather that looks perfectly pleasant from Broadway.
