The Prodigy Verdict
Refined, Not Retired.
The Nieuw Statendam is the antidote to the "Theme Park at Sea." There are no go-karts or waterslides here. Instead, Holland America has bet the house on live music and diningβand they have won. The ship's heartbeat is the Music Walk on Deck 2, a cluster of high-quality venues (Rolling Stone, B.B. King's, Billboard) that makes the ship feel like a vibrant jazz city at night. While it retains the line's traditional elegance, the design is modern, airy, and musical (inspired by the curves of instruments). It is a premium experience that punches above its weight class in food and entertainment.
- Live music lovers (Blues, Rock, Classical, Top 40).
- Foodies who appreciate consistency (Rudi's Sel de Mer is a standout).
- Couples seeking a "grown-up" atmosphere without the luxury price tag.
- Nightlife: While the music is great, the ship gets quiet after 12:00 AM.
- Kids: Club HAL exists, but this ship is not designed for children.
- Smoking: The casino is not smoke-free and can bleed odor into the Music Walk.
The Zones
Nieuw Statendam is designed around the "Music Walk," a central promenade connecting the ship's premier entertainment venues.
Rolling Stone Room
A high-energy rock club. A five-piece band plays classic rock hits. It is the loudest and most energetic venue on the ship.
B.B. King's
The Blues Club. An eight-piece band featuring a horn section brings Memphis blues and funk to the high seas. The dance floor here is always full.
Billboard Onboard
Dueling pianos playing chart-toppers. It is an interactive venue where the crowd sings along, located right in the center of the action.
Greenhouse Spa
The crown jewel of relaxation. Features a massive hydrotherapy pool and heated ceramic loungers with floor-to-ceiling ocean views.
World Stage
A theater in the round with a 270-degree LED screen. It hosts BBC Earth nature documentaries set to live orchestral music.
Club Orange
The exclusive dining venue for suite guests and those who purchase the pass. It offers the same menu as the main dining room but in a private setting.
Crow's Nest
Located on Deck 12 forward. A quiet observation lounge with board games, puzzles, and the Explorations CafΓ©. Best spot for reading.
Lido Pool
Features a retractable roof for all-weather swimming. The upper deck hosts "Movies by the Pool" in the evenings with popcorn.
Dining & Provisions
Holland America invests heavily in its Culinary Council. The food quality here is noticeably higher than other premium lines.
Pinnacle Grill
Steakhouse
The signature steakhouse. Known for its candied bacon clothesline and 28-day wet-aged USDA Prime steaks.
Rudi's Sel de Mer
French Seafood
An intimate French brasserie by Master Chef Rudi Sodamin. Fresh seafood, fruits de mer, and salt-crust baked fish.
Tamarind
Pan-Asian
Located aft with stunning views. Serves dishes from Southeast Asia, China, and Japan. Also houses the Nami Sushi bar.
Grand Dutch Cafe
European Cafe
The ship's Dutch soul. Coffee is extra, but the pea soup, apple tart, and bossche bol (chocolate profiterole) are complimentary.
Dive-In
Poolside Grill
Widely considered the best burger at sea. Made to order with brioche buns and secret sauce. The fries are also excellent.
New York Pizza
Poolside
Thin-crust personal pizzas made to order. Also serves salads and deli sandwiches. Overlooks the Lido pool.
The Dining Room
Main Venue
A spectacular two-story venue designed by Adam D. Tihany. Features curved architectural pillars and a consistently high-quality menu.
Canaletto
Italian
A popup style venue in the Lido Market (at night) serving family-style Italian comfort food. Good value for a specialty option.
Where It Sails
Nieuw Statendam is a global roamer, spending winters in the Caribbean and summers in Europe (Med/Iceland).
- Caribbean (Winter)
- Iceland & North Cape (Summer)
- Mediterranean (Spring/Fall)
This ship often does "Collectors' Voyages," which are back-to-back itineraries that do not repeat ports, allowing for 14-21 day trips.

- Grand Dutch Cafe (Food Only)
- Music Walk Venues (No Covers)
- Pinnacle Grill ($46+)
- Rudi's Sel de Mer ($55+)

Skip the main dining room dessert and go to the Grand Dutch Cafe for a "Bossche Bol." It's a giant chocolate-covered cream puff, and it's free.
The Vibe Check
Is this ship for you? It is traditional but not "old."
Sophisticated and quiet during the day, alive with blues and rock at night. It feels more like a boutique hotel than a mega-resort.
While historically older, the Music Walk has attracted a younger Gen X and Boomer crowd. There are very few children on board.
