The Prodigy Verdict
Modern Classic.
The Westerdam occupies the sweet spot in the Holland America fleet. It is large enough to offer the full Music Walk experience—including the excellent B.B. King's Blues Club—but small enough to feel intimate and manageable. Unlike the newer, larger Pinnacle Class ships, the Westerdam maintains a stronger connection to the ocean with wide promenade decks and a classic tiered aft design. It is quiet by industry standards, but never boring for those who appreciate live music, fine dining, and enrichment talks over water slides and DJ sets.
- Couples seeking a relaxed, romantic atmosphere.
- Music lovers who prioritize live bands over theatre production shows.
- Explorers heading to Alaska or Asia who want a comfortable base camp.
- Nightlife: The ship becomes very quiet after midnight.
- Activity: No climbing walls, go-karts, or flowriders here.
- Demographic: Skews 55+, though summer Alaska sailings see more families.
The Zones
Sophisticated spaces designed for conversation, music, and observation.
B.B. King's
The heartbeat of the ship. An eight-piece band plays Memphis blues and funk nightly. It features the largest dance floor on the vessel.
Billboard Onboard
A dueling piano bar concept where two musicians play chart-toppers and take requests. Located directly across from the casino bar.
World Stage
A technologically advanced theatre with a 270-degree wraparound LED screen. Shows combine live performance with immersive panoramic visuals.
Crow's Nest
The forward observation lounge on Deck 10. Home to Explorations Central (EXC), it offers 270-degree views, perfect for Alaska glacier days.
Lido Pool
The main pool deck featuring a retractable magrodome roof. This ensures swimming is possible regardless of the weather in Alaska or Norway.
Greenhouse Spa
Features a hydrotherapy pool with mineral water and heated ceramic loungers. Access requires a pass, which often sells out on cold-weather cruises.
Rolling Stone
The Rolling Stone Lounge features a live band playing rock, pop, and R&B hits. It serves as the ship's late-night music venue.
Casino
A decently sized gaming floor located midship. It integrates with the Music Walk, allowing the energy from the bars to flow into the gaming area.
Dining & Provisions
HAL is known for high-quality food execution. The Culinary Council oversees the menus across all venues.
The Dining Room
Main Restaurant
The two-story main venue. Serves excellent 5-course meals with a focus on sustainable seafood and global flavors.
Lido Market
Modern Buffet
Not a traditional trough buffet. Staff serve food from themed stations (Roasting Pan, Distant Lands, Wild Harvest) to ensure freshness.
Dive-In
Poolside Grill
Widely considered the best burger at sea. Made to order with brioche buns and secret sauce. The fries with dipping sauce are essential.
Pinnacle Grill
Steakhouse
The flagship specialty restaurant. Features premium cuts of beef, candied bacon, and seafood in an intimate, white-tablecloth setting.
Canaletto
Italian
A section of the Lido transformed into an Italian restaurant at night. Great for sharing plates of pasta and veal.
New York Pizza
Poolside
Thin-crust personal pizzas made to order. Located by the aft pool, making it a perfect spot for a casual lunch.
Room Service
24 Hours
HAL is one of the few lines still offering a hot breakfast via room service complimentary. Excellent for scenic balcony cruising.
Explorations Café
Coffee House
Located in the Crow's Nest. Serves premium espresso drinks and pastries with the best view on the ship.
Where It Sails
The Westerdam specializes in longer, destination-rich itineraries.
- Alaska (Summer)
- Japan & Asia (Winter/Spring)
Westerdam is perfectly sized for Alaska, able to navigate tighter fjords while offering covered viewing areas. It is also a favorite for 14-day Japan intensives.
