The Prodigy Verdict
The Sweet Spot.
The Norwegian Gem holds a cult status among loyal NCL cruisers. As a Jewel Class ship, it bridges the gap between the older, smaller vessels and the massive new megaships. It offers ample connection to the ocean—specifically via "The Great Outdoors" aft deck—while still packing in NCL signatures like a bowling alley and multiple specialty restaurants. Starting late 2025, it becomes the first NCL ship to homeport in **Jacksonville**, making it a vital option for the Southeastern drive market.
- Drive-to-cruise markets (Jacksonville, Boston, NYC).
- Travelers who find the Prima and Breakaway classes "too big."
- Multi-generational families needing a balance of activity and relaxation.
- Age: While refurbished in 2022, cabin layouts and bathrooms remain vintage 2007 size.
- No Slides: There is a slide on the pool deck, but it is modest compared to the Aqua Racer loops on newer ships.
- Balconies: Hull balconies on forward decks can be more enclosed than modern glass ones.
The Zones
Easy to navigate with a classic vertical layout. Most action is concentrated on Decks 6, 7, and 12.
Bliss Ultra Lounge
A moody, velvet-draped nightclub that features a 4-lane bowling alley. A rare find at sea these days and a signature of the Pearl/Gem era.
Spinnaker Lounge
The forward observation lounge. Features tiered seating for panoramic ocean views by day, and transforms into a dance hall/game show venue by night.
The Great Outdoors
Located aft of the buffet. It’s an open-air dining terrace that is arguably the best spot for breakfast or a sunset drink on the entire ship.
Crystal Atrium
The central hub featuring a massive high-definition screen. Home to O'Sheehan's and the guest services desk.
Dining & Provisions
A balanced mix of included and specialty options. The Gem is unique for having a complimentary Asian venue.
Orchid Garden
Asian Fusion
A rare gem! While Asian dining costs extra on most NCL ships, Orchid Garden is often complimentary here. Great noodle dishes and wok-fried staples.
O'Sheehan's
24/7 Pub
Overlooking the atrium. Serves wings, burgers, and fish 'n' chips around the clock. The breakfast here is a quiet alternative to the buffet.
Cagney's
Steakhouse
Located on Deck 13. Features an open kitchen and heavy American steakhouse vibes. Try the truffle fries and the ribeye.
Moderno
Churrascaria
Brazilian steakhouse where passadores serve slow-roasted meats tableside. The salad bar here is massive and excellent.
Le Bistro
French
Intimate and upscale. A great spot for a romantic dinner. The chocolate fondue for two is a signature dessert here.
Grand Pacific
Main Dining
The aft MDR inspired by the grand ocean liners of the past. High ceilings, large windows, and a statue at the entrance set the tone.
La Cucina
Italian
Classic Italian comfort food. Features a nice outdoor seating area on Deck 12 if the weather permits.
Topsiders
Pool Grill
The poolside spot for hot dogs and burgers. Perfect for grabbing a quick bite without having to dry off and change.
Where It Sails
A versatile wanderer. Norwegian Gem is famous for its varied deployment, now anchored by a strategic new homeport in Jacksonville.
- Bahamas & Caribbean (Jacksonville)
- Bermuda & Maine (Boston)
- Mediterranean/Greek Isles (Summer)
The Jacksonville sailings (starting Nov 2025) are a game changer for the Southeast, offering easy drive-up access to 4, 5, and 11+ day cruises without the chaos of Florida's southern ports.

Cost Reality
NCL's "Free at Sea" makes the upfront fare look higher, but it includes drinks and dining credits. Always do the math on the gratuities.
- Grand Pacific & Magenta MDRs
- Orchid Garden (Asian)
- O'Sheehan's (24/7)
- Great Outdoors Buffet
- Bowling ($)
- Mandara Spa Pass
- Specialty Dining (Cagney's, etc.)
- Room Service (convenience fee)
The Spa Thermal Suite on Jewel Class ships is one of the best values in the fleet. It is located forward with floor-to-ceiling windows, unlike the interior thermal suites on some newer ships.
The Vibe Check
Is this ship for you? It's relaxed, accessible, and less chaotic than the megaships.
Casual elegance. The decor features lots of rich woods and gem-toned accents. It feels more nautical and connected to the sea than the inward-facing megaships.
Heavily dependent on the homeport. Expect locals from Jacksonville, Boston, or NY. It tends to skew slightly older than the Breakaway class, but still very family-friendly.

Cabin Recon
The Gem features some of the most extreme accommodation variances at sea, ranging from tight insides to massive multi-deck villas.
3-Bedroom Garden Villa
The crown jewel of NCL. A sprawling 4,000+ sq ft residence with a private garden, hot tub, and piano. It sleeps up to 8 and offers the ultimate Haven experience.
Club Balcony Suite
Formerly "Mini-Suites." They offer slightly more space and a larger bathroom than standard balconies. A great middle-ground for families.
The Haven
On Jewel Class ships, the Haven is a small, exclusive courtyard complex. It feels like a private boutique hotel with a small private pool and sundeck.
