The Prodigy Verdict
A Successful Pivot.
The Norwegian Joy has one of the most interesting histories in the fleet. Originally purpose-built for the Chinese market, it was heavily "Westernized" in 2019 to join the US fleet. This origin story benefits the current passenger: the ship features high-end finishes and a massive Observation Lounge designed for tea culture, which now serves as the best indoor lounge in the NCL fleet. A 2024 dry dock further corrected its initial shortcomings by finally adding a Thermal Suite (Spa) and expanding the Vibe Beach Club, making it a complete competitor to its sister ship, the Norwegian Bliss.
- Sightseers: The Observation Lounge makes this the premier choice for Alaska and Canada/NE sailings.
- Groups: The wide variety of cabins (now including solos) suits diverse budgets.
- Gamers: The Galaxy Pavilion offers the best VR experience at sea.
- No Spice H2O: Unlike other ships in this class, Joy uses the aft space for the Speedway, meaning there is no free adults-only aft pool area.
- Pool Deck: The main pool deck is compact and crowded on warm weather cruises.
The Zones
From the quiet luxury of the Observation Lounge to the roar of the Speedway, the ship is segmented by energy level.
Observation Lounge
A massive, 180-degree forward-facing lounge on Deck 15. Features a full bar and light snacks. It is the best place to be during scenic cruising.
Joy Speedway
A two-level electric go-kart track on the top deck. It is a thrilling experience, though it comes with an extra cost per ride.
The Waterfront
The quarter-mile oceanfront promenade on Deck 8. Lined with bars and restaurants offering outdoor seating. A signature Breakaway-class feature.
Galaxy Pavilion
A dedicated virtual reality complex. Features simulators, dark rides, and gaming stations. Pricing is à la carte or via a cruise-duration pass.
Mandara Spa
Significantly upgraded in 2024 to include a proper Thermal Suite with waterfalls, saunas, and heated loungers, correcting a major initial flaw.
The Haven
The "Ship within a Ship" complex located at the very top. Features a private courtyard with a retractable roof, pool, restaurant, and lounge.
Dining & Provisions
Dining on Joy is extensive. The standout is the Food Republic, a fusion venue often overlooked by passengers.
Food Republic
Asian Fusion
Order via tablet. Dishes like pork belly bao buns and sushi rolls are fantastic. A hidden gem for lunch or dinner.
Cagney's
Steakhouse
The NCL staple. Offers outdoor seating on The Waterfront. Features premium cuts like Certified Angus Beef and truffle fries.
Q Texas Smokehouse
BBQ
Authentic Texas-style BBQ (brisket, ribs, chicken) accompanied by a live country band. A fun, casual atmosphere.
Le Bistro
French
The most elegant venue onboard. White tablecloths, rich service, and classics like Escargot and Duck à l'Orange.
The Local
Pub & Grill
24-hour pub located above the atrium. Serves Reuben sandwiches, fish and chips, and wings. The best spot for a late-night snack.
La Cucina
Italian
Classic Italian fare served in a rustic setting. Features outdoor seating on The Waterfront, which is lovely at sunset.
Main Dining
3 Venues
Three distinct rooms (Manhattan Room, Taste, Savor) serve the same rotating daily menu. The Manhattan Room features live music.
Ocean Blue
Seafood
Refined seafood dining. Located on The Waterfront. Known for its Dover Sole and outdoor ambiance.
Where It Sails
Norwegian Joy is a workhorse for the fleet, handling premium high-demand routes like NYC-Bermuda and Miami-Caribbean.
- 7-Night Bermuda (from NYC)
- 7-Night Caribbean (from Miami)
- Canada & New England (Seasonal)
The Bermuda run from NYC is particularly popular. The ship docks at Royal Naval Dockyard for several days, acting as your floating hotel.

Cost Reality
NCL's "Free at Sea" promotion is the standard, but budget for the service charges and the activities that cost extra (Speedway, VR).
- Main Dining & Buffet
- Observation Lounge Access
- Splash Academy (Kids)
- The Local (24/7 Pub)
- Speedway ($15/ride)
- Galaxy Pavilion Games
- Thermal Suite Pass
- Specialty Dining
The Observation Lounge has light snacks (sandwiches, desserts) throughout the day. It's a great free alternative to the buffet for a quiet breakfast or lunch.
The Vibe Check
Is this ship for you? It is big, bold, and distinctively upscale for the mass market.
It feels less "plastic" than older NCL ships. The decor is muted and premium, likely due to its original design for the Asian market.
Diverse. You'll see multi-generational families (thanks to the Speedway/Haven combo) and couples seeking a resort-style getaway.

Cabin Recon
The 2024 update reconfigured some spaces to add new cabins, including Solo Balconies. The Concierge level (Club Balcony) is prominent here.
Solo Balcony
Added in 2024. These cabins offer a private balcony for solo travelers, a rarity in the industry. Keycard access to the Studio Lounge is included.
Club Balcony Suite
Formerly "Mini-Suites." These offer a larger bathroom with a double sink and a spacious shower. The extra space is worth the upgrade from a standard balcony.
The Haven
The gold standard for ship-within-a-ship concepts. Exclusive pool, restaurant, and bar. Keycard access only. It is a sanctuary on a busy ship.
