The Prodigy Verdict
Serenity at Sea.
The Viking Mars is the newest addition to Viking's identical ocean fleet. It adheres strictly to the brand's "anti-cruise" philosophy: no casino, no kids, no umbrella drinks, and no art auctions. Instead, you get a light-filled, residential ship designed for comfort and intellectual curiosity. Every stateroom has a balcony, the thermal spa is included for everyone, and the lectures are actually delivered by experts (historians, diplomats). It is refined, quiet, and predictable in the best possible way.
- Travelers who care more about the destination than the ship itself.
- Couples seeking a quiet, adult-only environment.
- Value seekers who want Wi-Fi, wine, and excursions included.
- Nightlife is subdued; if you want casinos and discos, this isn't it.
- The demographic skews older (55+), though younger guests are welcome.
- Itineraries are port-intensive, often with very few sea days.
The Experience
The ship feels like a floating boutique hotel. The "Zones" are defined by comfort, light, and cultural immersion.
Living Room
The central atrium space. Instead of a glitzy lobby, it's a cozy library filled with Assouline books, comfortable chairs, and a bar.
The Spa
Included for all guests. Features a Nordic thermal suite with a snow grotto, sauna, steam room, and thalassotherapy pool.
Explorers' Lounge
A stunning two-deck observation lounge forward. Designed for scenic cruising with floor-to-ceiling windows and maritime artifacts.
Wintergarden
An elegant space under a canopy of Scandinavian wood "trees." This is the venue for daily afternoon tea with live classical music.
Main Pool
Features a retractable roof, making it usable in any weather. It's heated and quiet, perfect for laps or reading.
Infinity Pool
The iconic glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern. It offers incredible wake views and is a signature Viking feature.
Dining & Provisions
Viking includes almost all dining in the fare. There are no "upcharge" specialty restaurants, only reservation requirements.
Manfredi's
Italian
Widely considered the best Italian restaurant at sea. The Bistecca Fiorentina (ribeye) is legendary. Reservations essential.
The Restaurant
Main Dining
Open seating with floor-to-ceiling windows (that can open!). The menu changes daily with regional specialties.
The Chef's Table
Tasting Menu
Offers rotating 5-course tasting menus (e.g., Asian, Mexican, Norwegian) with wine pairings included.
Mamsen's
Norwegian Deli
Located in the Explorers' Lounge. Famous for heart-shaped waffles with brown cheese, open-faced sandwiches, and split pea soup.
World Café
Buffet
Upscale buffet with open kitchens. The seafood bar (sushi, crab legs, shrimp) in the evenings is exceptional.
Pool Grill
Casual
Gourmet burgers (try the Pancho Villa), hot dogs, and a salad bar. Perfect for lunch by the pool.
The Kitchen Table
Cooking School
The only extra-fee dining. You shop at a local market with the chef, then return to prepare and eat the meal.
Room Service
24 Hours
Available 24/7 with a surprisingly extensive menu (steak, salmon, burgers) at no extra charge.
Where It Sails
Viking Mars is a globetrotter, focusing on longer, destination-intensive voyages rather than 7-day loops.
- Mediterranean Antiquities
- Scandinavia & The Baltic
- Southeast Asia & Australia
Viking often stays late in port or overnights, allowing for dinner ashore. Excursions are included in every port (usually a walking tour).

The Vibe Check
Is this ship for you? It is calm, educational, and understated.
Like a high-end Scandinavian living room. Light woods, wool blankets, and crackling (virtual) fireplaces. Very quiet.
Well-traveled, older adults (55+). You won't find children or late-night party animals here.
